About me

Umar AhmedI am a political and public affairs consultant with a particular interest in online communications. In August 2009 I entered the Brussels bubble after joining Gellis Communications, where I advise clients on the development of online communication strategies and effective engagement with social media.

My expertise in advocacy and communications has developed through my work within the NGO sector – Human Rights Watch (London) and the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (The Hague) – and the Irish political sphere. During the campaign for the 2009 European Parliament elections I directed the online campaign strategy for incumbent MEP Eoin Ryan (Fianna Fail-ALDE).

My greatest achievement online has to be starting up the Boris Johnson Appreciation Society on facebook. I maintain to this day that it was the buzz around that group that kick-started Boris’ successful campaign for Mayor of London (Boris may disagree).

On occasion I have been accused of being a little over-dressed but, as my good friend Oscar Wilde put it, I make up for it by being immensely over-educated. With three degrees in the bag, I feel these sentiments are wholly justified.

Originally from Dublin, Ireland, I have lived and worked in London, Amsterdam, The Hague and Brussels.

This blog represents my thoughts on politics and campaigning, often with a strong focus on how the internet and online communications are changing the way politics is conducted. I write about politics and current affairs in Ireland, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

These views are my own views and not necessarily the views of my employer, though we do agree at times.
